Not Settling for Lesser Truth
25 May 2006

Last night was a great event here at the church. We had a special guest panel of scholars, Dr. Warren Gage and Dr. Sam Lamerson, from Knox Theological Seminary. I’ve been privileged to have both of these men as my professors in seminary. They’ve helped me unlock many treasures in Scripture. Last night was no exception. Here’s an MP3 of the night.

The event was to explore some of the questions that arise from the book and movie “The Da Vinci Code.” The one thing I walked away from that evening reflecting upon was…

The Foundation for a Pastor
10 May 2006

In having given the lecture on Judas recently I have been reflecting on him as he compares to Peter. Why? Both betray the Savior, yet only one repented. Even though the KJV translation uses the word “repent“ for Judas, we see him go back to those who gave him the 30 pieces of silver, the price of a slave, and not to the Savior, or to Father God. Yet it was Peter who repented and because of this, was restored by Christ at the end of the Gospel of John, and accepted by the early church. It is…

“Lost Gospel of Judas” Lecture
07 May 2006

Here’s the lecture I gave on May 7, 2006, on the Lost Gospel of Judas. It’s a re-presentation of material given by Drs. Lamerson and White from Knox Theological Seminary that I wanted to share with my church family.

You can check out the actual document on the National Geographic website.

Thoughts on Holy Thursday
14 April 2006

Last night, we had a great service for Holy Thursday. I like how we blend in liturgical elements (Apostles Creed) during these types of services. They give the worship experience a sense of historical context. We usually have a mid-week service that has large-group teaching, followed by small-groups breaking up over campus and exploring that week’s topic. Yet for Holy Week, we move the midweek service to Thursday in honor of our Savior’s Upper Room ministry. I find it odd that some churches don’t take advantage of the many opportunities to make memories around the events of Passion week. I know…

Interpretation, Irritation, and Christian Rad
29 March 2006

These last few week’s I’ve started work on producing a daily radio show and podcast called “Live Your Design.” Like many things in the ministry you are called upon to do, I had no experience. smile So I began listening to Christian radio to hear how other shows are produced. This is something I don’t usually do. That may sound odd coming from a pastor, but most every time I listen to Christian radio or watch Christian TV I get irritated. So, in order to reduce my stress I just don’t do it. The reason…

John David Webster Concert
25 March 2006

Tonight my church had its first concert in our 2006 concert series. John David Webster performed. I must say I was really impressed with his music. He and his drummer were the only two guys on stage, but it sounded huge. They had an authentic tone, and the lyrics resonated with my stage in life. Everyone there had a great time. Before the concert a couple of the small-groups of the church had a talegating party that was a lot of fun. We had all of our kids there. They played ball and pretended to do battle with sticks.…

Hymns and Hypocrisy
24 March 2006

I know, I know. Someone is going to read this and take it the wrong way. So before you send me flame mail please try to understand where I’m coming from:

  1. I love hymns. The theology in and stories behind hymns are amazing.
  2. I think the church should sing them! They help plant images of truth in the hearts of people.

However, I find it striking how those who criticize churches for “not singing enough hymns” are often people who should be asked the hard questions that probe into their lives of “not being generous with their giving” or “not attending…
