Knowing Neighbors
22 May 2006
I really never knew our neighbors until we moved into our current community about 2 years ago. We moved in between the two hurricanes that hit south Florida, and immediately to go know each one of them as we boarded up and rode out the storms of 2004.
Tonight my wife and I were hanging out in the front yard with some of our boys, a nephew, and some neighborhood kids. Our dog has a long training leash that turned into a limbo rope, and then a jump rope for them. As we were playing, some neighbors came over and we got to talking and enjoying the warm, damp evening air.
One of the neighbors we’ve lived across the street from also works as a hostess at a restaurant we frequent on Sunday afternoon. In fact, a few weeks ago she came up to us to seat us and said to me, “You don’t know who I am do you?” I froze as I searched thru my mind like someone late looking for car keys. No luck. She said, “I’m your neighbor.” Wow. She’d been working at the restaurant about the same length of time as she’s been our neighbor and I never made the connection. I told her, “I didn’t recognize you without your slippers.” I wave to her almost every morning across the street as she sends her husband off to work and I take my kids to school. Isn’t it funny how we know people by their surrounding? It kind of reminds me of how Clark Kent could hide his identity as Superman by simply putting on a pair of glasses. Speaking of which, my almost 2 year old son gets a pair of glasses tomorrow. He’s extremely farsighted. I’ll post some photos of him. This should be interesting.
UPDATE: 5/23/06 - Evan’s glasses won’t be in for a few more days.
